Many foreign firms in the Japanese market send representatives with the relevant skills needed to handle the technical aspects of their business - manufacturing, development, marketing etc.

However financial control and other administration skills are seldom part of these attributes.

As a result, a professional approach is frequently not taken to establish sound financial controls and arrangements are put in place that, even if initially adequate, will rarely serve the best long term interests of the company. These can include the use of book-keepers, relatively untrained and not in tune with the requirements of the business, or having the accounts prepared by a firm of accountants who are even less likely to do more than provide a mechanical processing service. (Japanese accounting skills are, of course, vital to provide statutory and tax filings but even here they need to be asked the right questions rather than be expected to lead the client to the best advantage).
